Hans Schirmacher, born in Amsterdam, obtained a degree in drawing and lithography at the Institute for Graphic Arts. He travelled through France, Germany and Austria and worked for a short period as an assistant to a set designer in a theatre. Later, in Switzerland, he worked in commercial graphics while still painting, and after a few years he moved to Italy where he started his family. Since 1958 he has lived in Florence and participated in numerous collective art exhibitions. He had his first personal exhibition in 1967, followed by others in which his transformation from a classic way of painting into geometric abstractionism was evident.
From 1974 his activity as a graphic designer absorbed him for a long time and during that period he went back to his original, figurative style. Since 1994 he has shown his watercolour works and his oil paintings in many collective and personal exhibitions in Florence (Italy), Fes (Morocco), Amsterdam (Holland), San Francisco (USA) and St. Petersburg (Russia). He was awarded several prizes in the collective exhibitions. His main inspirations are country landscapes and town views. He chooses to work on the spot, absorbing directly live atmospheres. Occasionally he works on still lives in a more meditative mood. Tuscany, Venice and the South of Italy provide him with endless inspiration.
His works are in private collections in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Morocco and in USA.
